Abstract
Introduction: In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to widespread social distancing. These changes disrupted medical congresses and shifted healthcare resources. Despite the focus on SARS-CoV-2, timely and specialized care for traumatic and non-traumatic surgical emergencies remained a critical public health need.
Aim: The 4th Albanian Congress of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ACTES 2020) took place virtually on December 21-22, 2020, in Tirana, Albania. Its main goal was to ensure ongoing specialized surgical education and professional development, with a focus on optimizing care for critically ill and surgically impaired patients during the pandemic.
Methodology and Scope: ACTES 2020 prioritized high standards of emergency care, broad clinical competence, multidisciplinary collaboration, and effective communication. The virtual format allowed health professionals to share knowledge and improve best practices. The congress also emphasized the value of subspecialization in managing complex cases.
Conclusion: ACTES 2020 reinforced emergency surgeons' responsibility to deliver high-quality care to critically ill and injured patients, despite pandemic-related resource constraints. The virtual format supported professional networking and knowledge exchange, promoting ongoing quality improvement in trauma and emergency surgery during a challenging global period.
